Multinational oil giant Eni has extended its partnership with Algeria’s state-owned energy company SONATRACH, embarking on a collaboration focused on nature-based carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and methane management.
This builds on a three-year cooperation framework signed between the two companies back in January 2023, when Eni and SONATRACH initially partnered to reduce gas flaring, recover gas that would otherwise be wasted, and cut emissions from upstream operations across Algeria’s energy sector.
Now, the partners have signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), under which they will explore nature-based CO2 removal through forestry projects and broaden their work on methane monitoring, measurement, and reduction.
With this move, methane continues to be a central focus of the collaboration while also expanding carbon management efforts outside oil and gas facilities and bringing land-based CO2 sequestration into the companies’ broader decarbonization strategy.
To pursue these two domains, the two companies will adopt relevant international oil and gas standards.
